Square Enix opens new mobile game studio in London

Video game giant Square Enix has opened a new mobile game development studio, according to foreign website GamesIndustry. The studio already has two major projects in the works in addition to having familiar faces from Square.

The new branch will be led by Ed Perkins, Mobile Publishing Director at Square Enix, which may worry some because of how Square Enix games are released on mobile devices, but more on that later.

The games being produced at this exact moment were also released by the site. The first of these is Tomb Raider Reloaded, announced at the end of last year, the game consists of a top-down arcade action and puzzle adventure, with some strategy elements, and is being developed by Emerald City and published by the subsidiary of Square in London.

Tomb Raider Reloaded is a free game and is scheduled for release in 2022. Another game without an official name in confirmed development is a project about Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, and is being worked on in partnership with Navigator Games, from Canada. .

Navigator has posted new vacancies on its website to bring Avatar to the mobile world, one of them for a mobile game designer that reveals some important things about the project.

One of the requirements for job applicants is “Outstanding understanding of F2P games, including economies, player progression and live events”, another that is very worth highlighting is “Deep knowledge of the mobile RPG genre.”

With that we have indications that this project is a free-to-play RPG, maybe online, but without more relevant information about any official name or dates.

With the new changes, it is possible to see even more Square Enix games for mobile devices in the next year, not least because it wouldn't make sense to make this investment without a good amount of projects to support it. However, the company has a bit of a conflict with some players, due to some problems that happened recently.

An article from the Android Police website published in September of this year criticized the arrival of the SaGa Final Fantasy Legends games collection with a very steep price, without support for important elements and the lack of resources in the game. The journalist and writer of the article, Matthew Sholtz, was very harsh in the criticism, check out an excerpt:
